Back Pain and The Alexander Technique

This page has been posted to provide some general information about the treatment of back pains.

There can be a number of reasons why people suffer from back pains so the best solutions will be those that are relevant to the root cause(s) of back conditions. It might be helpful to draw the attention of clients to the following webpage on The Prince’s Foundation For Integrated Healthcare should any energy healers find that energy treatments are not proving to be particularly successful in helping symptoms and that conventional medical treatment is not helping much either -  http://www.fih.org.uk/integrated_health/research_and_evidence/alexander_technique.html

The page is about a series of clinical trials that took place in 2008 covering the application of The Alexander Technique in treating back pains. The FIH page advises that 579 patients from 64 GP doctors’ practices and 59 Alexander Technique teachers took part in the trials. They were undertaken to professional research standards and showed The Alexander Technique to have a reasonable degree of effectiveness. The number of lost days of activity as a result of back pain declined markedly as did the overall number of activities that could not be achieved due to back pain.

The Alexander Technique is not a therapy in the usually understood terminology but is an approach that looks at different aspects of day to day life including movement, posture, behaviours, etc., from the point of view of an integrated mind / body approach to health and to the release and avoidance of unnecessary tension.

The results of the research were published in the online version of the British Medical Journal under the title ‘Randomised controlled trial of Alexander technique lessons, exercise, and massage (ATEAM) for chronic and recurrent back pain’.
