Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki

Committee on Doctrine

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Background

When I refer to Reiki, I use the name to refer to the specific energy that Mikao Usui had the psychic initiation into and which has been passed down through a line of Reiki teachers. I do not use the name Reiki in a generic sense to cover energies in general as many other healers do.

On 25th March 2009, the Committee on Doctrine of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a guidance document named ‘Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki as an Alternative Therapy’.  A copy of this document may be found online on the following web page:

http://old.usccb.org/doctrine/Evaluation_Guidelines_finaltext_2009-03.pdf

There are clearly some issues with the Bishops not really understanding what Reiki treatments are all about as they have never been taught the practice of Reiki.

However, the reason why I have felt it appropriate to make reference to the Bishops’ Guidelines on this website is that it is very important for people in the Reiki sector to be aware of the problems they create for the credibility of Reiki when they attach interpretations and projections to the practice of Reiki which are not part of Reiki or which do not have any basis in reality. Here in the United Kingdom, Reiki has ceased to be held in the same high regard as when it first came to be practiced here because of the way that projections have been put on to it and so called new systems of Reiki have been developed. People doing internet search get confused as to what Reiki really is as when they see so many different commentaries about Reiki.

Response from William Rand

My Reiki teaching lineage has come down through the American Reiki teacher William Rand. William Rand is the well known founder of The International Center for Reiki Training based in the USA and is Head of Lineage for the trademarked Karuna Reiki system. William is one of the people within the Reiki community who has done most to facilitate the widespread teaching of Reiki around the world and his leadership has helped to change the world. My teacher for Reiki learned direct from William.

William has published a response to the Bishops’ Statement on Reiki which can be found on the following web page on his website: http://www.reiki.org/reikinews/ResponseBishopsStatement.html.

I resonate with much of William’s response which is why I have published the link to it, and I feel that it is a great pity that the Bishops did not consult with leading Reiki teachers such as William when researching the issue of Reiki and before they issued the Guidelines.

Response from Paul Mitchell

Paul Mitchell is one of Hawayo Takata’s original 22 Reiki Masters and is still actively practicing Reiki in Idaho with his wife Susan. He had started to train as a Catholic priest when he was young and is a practicing Catholic today.

He has published his response to the Bishops’ Statement on Reiki which can be found on the following web page on his website:  http://reikihealingarts.com/2009/06/pauls-letter-to-the-catholic-bishops.

Future actions

This situation with the American Bishops has been caused in part by people not being disciplined enough to draw a clear dividing line between psychic and spiritual experiences that they may have had as a consequence of Reiki having raised their energy vibration rate and Reiki itself. By trying to link everything together as being Reiki is incorrect and misleads other people. The situation has also been caused by people adding in a lot of New Age concepts to the practice of Reiki, many of which are completely out of any meaningful context, and by presenting these concepts as part of Reiki. I would ask therefore that people who have learned Reiki from myself simply keep to the teachings that I have passed down and resist the temptation to add in their own psychic or spiritual experiences and not to add in the usual New Age concepts that so many people seem to buy into with questioning their validity. Also please do not repeat the explanations and commentaries about Reiki from people posting to the internet before being able to speak from your own experiences of them. That way we will not add to the confusion in the public domain about what Reiki really is.

Thank you.
